DESERT
ways
A pilgrimage and initiation deep in the heart of the Sahara Desert

The Desert is not simply a landscape, it is a state of being, an experience that offers us a deep shift in perception, a threshold into another way of existing, one that has always lived within us and that has only been waiting to be revealed.
Deep in the heart of the desert, among the sand dunes and clear night skies we are stripped away of our knowing. The old ways can no longer be sustained and we enter a state of liminality typical of all initiation processes. Nothing can hide in the desert. To enter it and to traverse it, is to choose to surrender to its power of transformation. When we bring our bodies out into the landscape we risk something great: that of never coming back the same.
Accepting the Desert means accepting to enter a space of unknown, of a pause filled with the potentiality of a new life. We become intimate with loosing our sense of direction, our sense of what we believed to be real. We enter liminality.
Our invitation for you is to journey through the desert, like pilgrims, like the old seekers in search of new meaning or, perhaps, in order to let go of meaning. Here, we will let the Desert become a mirror, sometimes ruthless, other times filled with infinite compassion, yet always devoted to our own expansion and transformation.
This is, thus, less a self-improvement program and more like a loosening of the armouring around the self. It is less about what we will do and more about the ways we allow ourselves to be undone. It is a journey that speaks in an ancient tongue so needed for our modernity. The language of this landscape is poetic, paradoxical and non-linear. This is why we chose the Desert as our teacher afterall, because of its singing silence, endless vastness and alive emptiness.

THE ITINERARY
Our journey will begin and end in Ouarzazate (ورززات in Arabic and ⵡⴰⵔⵣⴰⵣⴰⵜ in Amazaigh) a town situated in the Dadès Valley, the last taste of “civilization” before the great expansiveness of the Desert. This will be a time to prepare and harvest, an opportunity to ease the entering and the exiting of our experience.
On the 6th of April we will enter the field of the Desert and journey through it for six nights. We will be guided by a very special group of men from and of the Desert who will be our pillars, teachers, cooks and much more. It is thanks to them that we can do this journey.

Days one and two will be spent travelling deeper in the landscape, changing camp each night. Days three and four we will rest in the same place. Days five and six we will continue our rhythm of travel and movement and change camps before we emerge again into civilization on the sixth day.
Our days will follow a steady pulse, as we see repetition as a powerful tool for shaping the soul. In reality, the Desert itself will guide most of our needs, through the heat and the cold, through the arrival of the day and the descent of the night. It is its rhythm we will surrender to.
Mornings will start before sunrise with prayer, contemplation and dreamwork. A time to set the tone of the day, listen to what the night has taught us and call forth that other way of listening that we will practice throughout the day. We will then be served a delicious breakfast cooked by our dear guides before we set off for our trek. On the day where we will be moving camp we will walk between three to four hours. Some days we will walk in silence, others we might have specific reflections to work with, yet others are thought of for deepening our connection.
Lunch will be served upon our arrival at camp with a snack offered along the way.
After some rest during the hottest hours we will meet again for our afternoon session..This will be the time of inner distillation and transformation, where we will dive into the depths of the work. Evening will be spent around the fire where we will have dinner, share song and music and dance and allow the breathtaking beauty of the night sky in the Desert to crack us open. Some night activities might be present too. Each day will repeat itself as a spiral that will guide us deeper and deeper within.

What draws us into the desert is the search for something intimate in the remote.
EDWARD ABBEY
the teachings
Once again, we want to reiterate that it is the silence and the expansiveness, the canopy of stars, the aloneness and togetherness, the songs and night fires, the nothingness that will be our wise teachers. This is what mystics, dreamers, seekers, poets, and adventurers have always known: landscapes, especially one such as the desert, can change us forever, initiating us into who we were always meant to be.

With that said, we will be creating the container for transformation to happen. This will include ritual and ceremony, contemplation, dream work, somatic practices, and inner alchemical work. Each day, we will dive deeper into the process of dissolving the old in order to open space for welcoming the new within us. At every step of the journey, we are invited to let go of beliefs, stories, and inner mechanisms that no longer support our lives.

We will offer practices to help open your vessel to learn how to listen better, to grow quieter, and to attune to the whisperings of your soul, the intelligence of your body, and the wisdom of the land. We will weave the individual and the collective together, creating a space for presence, transformation, and the reclamation of ancient and newly-emerging memories.

We also want to be transparent about the confrontational nature of this experience, which won’t necessarily be a “comfortable” one. We will be spending most of our time outside, in relationship with the harshness of the desert landscape with its heat, its sandstorms, and the elemental wisdom it carries. We will be sleeping in shared tents, learning how to live more simply and communally. And yet, despite these edges, we can assure you that these very confrontations will become the places from which we are cracked open and awakened to a deeper sense of what it means to be alive in our own unique way.
WHAT NEXT?
If the Desert calls you, it is hard not to listen. This landscape is probably inviting you into its mystery which is nothing but the mystery of your self and of life. To be in the Desert and pilgrimage through it is a life changing experience. One that reweaves us back quite rapidly to a connection to a deeper current of your life.

There is a desert I long
to be walking,
a wide emptiness:
Peace beyond any
understanding of it.
