ECHOES OF THE DESERT

A PILGRIMAGE THROUGH THE HEART OF THE DESERT

This is a heartfelt invitation to join us on this powerful, transformative and healing journey through and with the desert. A true voyage to remember how to listen, how to dream with the land, how to be undone and be reborn.

The Desert invites us, calls us, it lures us in without much presumption nor embellishment, the Desert is what it is: a place where we can rediscover a silence that speaks, an emptiness that is filled with new and ancient stories, a place to dissolve and be reborn, beyond our own identities and yet deeply alive.

If you have a “Desert calling” you know it. You know it because it is what you fear the most, perhaps keeps you up at night, or, maybe, because you feel a tug that is unexplainable yet seems to pull you with an immense force. You might have dreamt the Desert, or the Desert might have dreamt you, in blurry visions of sandy dunes and penetrating eyes, the sound of the dancing wind and the absolute stillness that both devours and breaks free. The Desert is a place filled with symbolism and, contemporarily, it denies all labels.

Our invitation is to journey with us for five nights through the desert. Each day we will pilgrimage to a new place, inviting new aspects of self to emerge and be dissolved. Truth is: the Desert is a confrontational place. No wonder so many mystical traditions emerged out of this landscape. This is why we are clear that discomfort will be part of the initiation, whether this is emotional discomfort or physical, things will bumble up. And, we will learn to welcome them all, to dance with them, to become true alchemists, until we can actually invite the great emptiness of the Desert speak to us directly. This is our vision for our time together.

THE ITINERARY

Our first and last nights will be spent in a typical Riad in Ouarzazate (ورززات‎ in Arabic and ⵡⴰⵔⵣⴰⵣⴰⵜ in Berber). This town, situated in the Dadès Valley, is considered the last outpost before the desert which we will enter on the 21st of April and journey through for five nights.

The rhythm of our gathering will be based on the landscape, movement, stillness and rest, will be dictated by the desert and the heat.  Days will begin at sunrise when we will gather for contemplative practices, dreamwork, deep listening and learning to let ourselves dissolve more and more into the vastness of the land. After a delicious breakfast, made by our dear guides on the open fire, we will set off into the expansive desert dunes. Each day we will trek with our camels for around three to four hours according to our itinerary.

Some days the trek will be silent and others we might have specific inputs and reflections that we will carry through our journey to then be shared once reunited again in circle. Lunch will be served upon our arrival at camp, alternatively, we may eat along the way. After some time of rest, while our camp is being set up, we will meet again before sunset for practice time, for exploration of our inner landscapes through movement, through voice explorations, creative processes, group sharing and ritual.

Evenings will be characterised by eating around the fire, sometimes with storytelling other times sharing song and music with our beautiful guides who will be teaching us through their voices and instruments the ways of the desert.

the teachings

We want to be clear that the Desert will be our greatest teacher throughout the time. The Desert as a place of dissolution, a place of transformation, a place of rebirth, as a spirit that beholds mysteries and teachings for us all. We will be opening a space to dream with and through the desert, to let this ancient land guide us in our processes of death and rebirth, in being a mirror to that which wants to be remembered through us.

The silence, the vastness of the land, the canopy of stars, the simplicity of life, the aloneness and togetherness, the night fire, the sands of time, the songs and dances will all be guiding us.

On top of that we will be offering practices to help open your vessel, to learn how to listen better, to get more quiet and listen to the whisperings of your soul, the intelligence of your body and the wisdom of the land. We will be weaving the individual and the collective together, creating a space for presence, transformation and reclamation of ancient and new memories.

We also want to be transparent about the confrontational nature of this experience which won't necessarily be a "comfortable" one. We will be spending most time outside, in relationship with the harshness of the desert landscape, with its heat, its sand storms and the elemental wisdom it carries. We will be sleeping in shared tents, learning how to live more simply and communally. And yet, despite these edge places, we also can assure you that these very confrontations will become the places from which we will be cracked open and awakened to a deeper sense of what it means to be alive in our own unique way.
